Hong Kong Battlefields

The Battle of Hong Kong took place between December 8-25, 1941.

It was the first action of WW II involving Canadians, with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and Royal rifles of Quebec City taking part in the defense of Hong Kong.

My Grandfather fought with the Royal Rifles.
1975 men, two nurses, and one dog took part in the Battle.

Jubilee Reservoir where the Battle began.

   

Gin Drinkers' Lin in New Territories- concrete trench across entire peninsula.

   

Lye Mun Gap - where Japanese forces landed on Island.

Wong Nai Chung Gap - Mountain slopes fought over to control access through HK. Pill boxes still present. HQ for Canadians there.
   

 

 

 

 

Sai Wan Military Cemetery- where over 200 Canadians are buried.

Stanley Cemetery- where 20 Canadians are buried, last point of Battle.

Sham Shui Po- POW Camp barbed wire.
